On Friday, August 26, 2022, three pedestrians died in unrelated crashes across the Tampa Bay area before sunrise. Source.

The first fatality occurred at around 4:15 in the morning when a seventy-one-year-old man from Holiday, Florida, was attempting to cross a southbound stretch of U.S. 19 at Mile Stretch Drive when he was hit by a Ford F-150. The pickup truck had a green light at the time of the crash.

Less than two hours later, the second crash occurred. An eighty-five-year-old man was crossing Starkey Road in Pinellas County when he was hit and killed. The pedestrian was not in a designated crosswalk while attempting to cross the road when a 2015 GMC pickup truck heading north struck and killed him while attempting to change lanes.

The third fatality took place just 45 minutes later. A fifteen-year-old boy was attempting to cross a dark, two-lane road when he was struck by a sedan traveling west on Belleair Road.

Following these accidents, residents in the Tampa Bay area made claims that there are many roads in Tampa that are unsafe for pedestrians, urging local governments to improve lighting and take safety measures. In Pinellas County, there have been 26 pedestrian deaths thus far in 2022, according to SignalFourAnalytics, a database that compiles law enforcement data across Florida. In Pasco County, 22 pedestrian deaths have occurred since the beginning of the year, according to the same database.
