At around 2:20 am on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, a driver was killed when a semi-trailer hit his car on East Hillsborough Avenue, just west of Harney Road. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver – a 49-year-old man from Land O Lakes – was stopped at a traffic signal when his car was struck by the semi. Source.

The driver of the car was stopped at a traffic light at the entrance to the NetPark Tampa Bay office campus, headed west. The semi-trailer driver – a 28-year-old from Midland, Texas – failed to stop or slow down when approaching the car. The semi-trailer then collided with the back of the car, pushing it through the intersection, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Both vehicles came to rest in the grass median nearby. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the semi-trailer suffered minor injuries. It is unclear whether or not the driver of the car was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident. The semi-trailer driver was seat belted.

An accident involving a truck or semi-trailer can be much more dangerous than an accident between two personal-use vehicles. Not only are semi-trailers and other commercial vehicles larger and heavier, but if they are carrying dangerous freight, the results could be catastrophic for those involved.
