Fatal Crash Shuts Down I-4 for Hours

At around 1:45 in the morning on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, a fatal car crash killed two people and shut down I-4 for hours. An Audi R8 was driving at high-speed approaching 50th Street on I-4 when he collided with the rear of a Toyota Camry while attempting to pass it and changing lanes. Source.

After the Audi hit the rear of the Camry, the Toyota began to spin and caught fire, while the Audi hit a guardrail and veered across the interstate before coming to a stop on the outside shoulder. Both the driver and the passenger in the Toyota were killed. There were two passengers in the Audi who both suffered from serious injuries and were hospitalized following the accident. The driver and both passengers in the Audi were not wearing seatbelts, and it is believed that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

Following the crash, a 4 mile stretch of the eastbound lanes was closed from Downtown Tampa East to Martin Luther King Boulevard and also brought traffic to a crawl approaching Downtown Tampa on I-275.
