The crash happened at around 2:15 in the morning on Monday, May 16, 2022. A twenty-six-year-old woman from Tampa driving a Buick Encore was impaired, tired, and decided to stop in the inside lanes while traveling southbound on I-75 near milepost 289. The driver of the Buick fled the scene to a nearby tree line, later returning after Florida Highway Patrol troopers arrived. She was arrested on charges of driving under the influence (DUI) with serious injury and leaving the scene of the crash.

The driver of the Chevy, a twenty-four-year-old woman from Philadelphia, was seriously injured. She had five children in her vehicle – a ten-year-old girl, and six-year-old girl, an eight-year-old girl, a six-year-old boy, and a one-year-old girl.
