Just last week, the care center reported zero cases of Coronavirus among residents and just four employees tested positive, according to data from the Florida Department of Health. Of the forty-one residents that have now tested positive for the virus, five have been transported to local nearby hospitals. A spokesperson with the care facility did not elaborate on these patients’ conditions or the care of the remaining residents who tested positive.

On May 15, 2020, an infection control and prevention survey was conducted at the Apollo Health facility. During this survey, state officials with the Agency for Healthcare Administration recorded employees failing to wash their hands after leaving resident care areas, failure to wear required personal protective equipment, and failure to properly clean a “screening device used for staff and persons from outside services.”

There have also been reported incidents of employees not wearing their protective equipment when caring for residents, despite the facility providing all employees with the proper protective equipment.

With the majority of Florida’s positive Coronavirus cases being in people over the age of 65, assisted living facilities and nursing homes are extremely vulnerable. When employees are not taking the proper precautions to prevent the spread of the virus, like this facility, residents are at an even higher risk of testing positive.
